Occasionally it becomes necessary to petition the court to have a guardian or conservator appointed for a minor child, a special needs child that reaches age 18, an elderly parent or family member, or someone who otherwise becomes incapacitated. While there are more efficient and less costly methods for dealing with some of these situations, documents must be in place before they are needed.
